Beta carotene is a natural carotenoid, which is mostly abundant in vegetables and fruits that are red, orange, yellow and dark green colour. Beta carotene is precursor to vitamin A and is converted into vitamin A  by tissue requirements.

Beta carotene like vitamin A is beneficial for the skin. If taken as supplement, a part of beta carotene is deposited in the skin pigmentation. For the tanning, supplementation can be taken for 1-2 weeks before a holiday on the sunny beach or exposition to sun. The supplementation can be continued for 1-2 weeks after the trip. Use of sun lotion with a high SPF is recommendable when tanning.
